El canciller sandinista Denis Moncada, mandó una carta solicitando al gobierno de México, administrado por el izquierdista Manuel López Obrador, para que su canciller no vote a favor de la aprobación de la Carta Democrática Interamericana de la OEA.
Moncada solicita de esta manera, el apoyo a uno de los gobiernos de izquierda de la región, para que en la próxima reunión de cancilleres no sea aprobada la Carta Democrática Interamericana.
Se necesitan 24 votos de cancilleres de la región, para que la Carta Democrática Interamericana sea una realidad para el gobierno sandinista, el cual es acusado de cometer graves violaciones a los derechos humanos de los ciudadanos nicaragüenses.
Mientras que el gobierno sandinista asegura ante los diferentes organismos internacionales, que lo que hubo en el país, fue un fallido intento de golpe de estado, algo que contradice al informe final del Grupo Internacional de Expertos Independientes (GIEI), el cual dice que no hubo tal intento de golpe de estado, sino un brutal uso de la fuerza por parte del gobierno.
